Crystal LED, Sony microLED technology in 440 inches

Very recently, Samsung was the firm that surprised us with a 146-inch super television (the famous The Wall) with microLED panels. However, the novelty in the sector has lasted very little since recently we have already been able to enjoy Sony’s microLED technology, called Crystal LED and on a sovereignly large screen, of nothing more and nothing less than 440 inches.

What do we know about Crystal LED?

Both panel and technology were presented at the NAB in Las Vegas, representing a great novelty in both panel size and performance for it.

Crystal LED consists of the combination of non-organic RGB microLED modules. These offer new brightness and contrast intensity pets capable of giving a high quality viewing support to any of the sizes that we can face today and in the medium future.

Be careful with the appearance of these images

Crystal LED reaches peaks of 1000 nits, just as new LEDs do, and its contrast stands at 1,000,000: 1.

The panel, meanwhile, has a width of 10 meters and a height of 5.5, being, as we said, its diagonal, 440 inches. Its resolution is 8K horizontally and 4K vertically.

However, as soon as it was exposed, it has already been possible to see the first failure of the panel: judder defects when moving below 30 fps.

For now, this technology must mature a little more, being worked on by firms that wish to make the leap. Although, it is clear that it is the next step that will mark a before and after in the sector.

For now, we can anticipate that the intention, if there is no change of plans, is to be able to enjoy this type of technology in the cinema before in consumer televisions, which makes sense since we are talking about work on giant screens; later would come the adjustment corresponding to “small” models.
